THE CORONATION OF POPPEA: 1950S
RE-DESIGN
Third Year, Semester Two (2021)
This project took place during lockdown in 2021.

The Coronation of Poppea is a well known opera by Claudio Monteverdi and for this design project we were assigned a specific period in time. My 1950s re-design focussed on the glamourous jazz scene of the early 50s as well as Teddy Boy subculture, drawing inspiration from the smoky jazz club interior for textile design.
From this project, I made the costume I designed for Poppea, the 1950s jazz singer. Her dress was made from deadstock taffeta, hand-painted with my own smoke design and embellished with embroidery and beading. As well as this, to highlight the smoky jazz-club theme, I used a soldering iron to burn holes in the bottom of the ruffle skirt.
